Aquarius Season

"Being original is the best form of rebellion."

Aquarius is one of the most difficult to understand and frequently contradictory signs of the zodiac.

Individual or social? Constructive or destructive? Madman or genius?

The one who brings order, or the one who disrupts it?

At the root of these dilemmas lies the fact that Aquarius is ruled by two planets with opposing principles.

The traditional ruler of Aquarius is Saturn, and its modern ruler is Uranus.

Saturn is concerned with social rules, establishing permanent structures through effort over long periods, laws with long-proven validity, and the continuity and preservation of the old, ossified, and traditional. It is conservative.

Uranus, on the other hand, is about tearing down obsolete patterns and rules, innovation and renovation, enlightenment and the future, theories instead of laws, thinking outside the box, independence, and the overturning of dysfunctional traditions. It is reformist.

Blending the meanings of both rulers within its own processes, Aquarius represents a consciousness that destroys the old through the Uranus principle and builds the new in its place through the Saturn principle. Therefore, on a social and universal scale, it is concerned with designing the evolution of mankind and building a better future. While doing this, although it leans on collective knowledge, it does not allow this to turn into dogma and block the path of free thought. Just like the 'human carrying water with a pitcher' in its symbol, it aims to transmit the water—that is, collective knowledge—to new generations not by rote, but by constantly updating it.

Defining Aquarius is difficult because it is neither as materialistic as Capricorn, which precedes it, nor as spiritual as Pisces, which follows it. It has an unconventional, surprising, and unpredictable nature. It is more like a conductor; a frequency carrying information between the concrete and the abstract, heaven and earth, the 'I' and the 'we'... It is in contact not only with the curves of the conscious mind but also with the deep waters of the unconscious.

It is the free captain of the collective ocean; it can contribute to the evolution of the society it is in only to the extent that it can be alone and remain slightly apart from society. Just like a scientist whose genius transcends boundaries… they work for society but are outside of it; they do not carry the anxiety of being understood by the masses.

The visionary nature of Uranus and its 'detached kite' individuality can easily be discerned in people with a heavy Aquarius concentration in their charts. Especially Aquarius stelliums, South Node and Moon in Aquarius placements, or having the luminaries in the 11th house strongly emphasize this temperament. While admiring a highly inclusive, polyphonic, egalitarian, and libertarian ideal regarding all of humanity in Aquarius—the most developed of the air element signs—on the other hand, you may be surprised to see how sharp the distinction between 'me and others' is within itself, how 'above' or 'outside' it inwardly perceives itself, and how far it consequently falls from establishing deep one-on-one bonds. Aquarius is the representation of feeling foreign and sometimes like an 'alien,' robotic distances, and alienation.

In Aquarius, there is an ego issue that needs to be regulated along with its opposite, Leo. Both sign archetypes are concerned with the healthy development and expression of the ego at a middle point. If both stray from this middle path, they can drift into a type of narcissism in different ways. In Aquarius, unlike Leo, ego processes are in the shadow, not in plain sight; therefore, they are not visible from the outside and can damage personality integrity by hollowing the person out from within. While serving social interests, Aquarius must never forget to develop its individual interest and a healthy sense of 'self,' and must not keep its colors and merits that differentiate it from others locked in dark rooms. In the shadow of Aquarius 'sacrificing its self for another,' there are the first traces of the next sign, Pisces, sacrificing and dissolving itself.

Now, a dense Aquarius gathering will accompany the Sun on its one-month journey as it moves into Aquarius. Venus and Pluto are already in Aquarius; subsequently, Mercury and Mars will join this group. Since this intense Aquarius dominance, which will be particularly active between January 23rd and February 7th, will be present in the annual charts of people born between these dates, its effect will continue for them throughout the year.

Another very important breaking point awaits us in February: this summer, the North Node moves into Aquarius, and we experience the first eclipse of this axis on February 17th. As you can see, for the next 2 years, the sky will invite us to overflow our containers, break our patterns, think outside the box, and become liberated with a thunderously flowing Aquarius energy.

This breaking of the shell may not happen the easy way. The idea of being liberated from our chains by destroying the old is beautiful; however, for this, we may first need to destroy the ideas and attitudes belonging to us that no longer work. If we cannot provide this necessary internal revolution, the system may handle it for us.

In February, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, and Mars will respectively square Uranus. The February 17th Aquarius eclipse will also take place in a tight square with its modern ruler, Uranus. In the world agenda during February, we will hear much more of the footsteps of major public uprisings, shocking events, and revolutionaries against the king. There may also be large and sudden changes in our personal lives. By defying authority figures and stereotypical traditions, we may fight to courageously reveal our originality and gain our rights; we may experience major breakups for this cause.

Aquarius, with its Uranian side, is pregnant with sudden and unexpected revolutions, but with its Saturnian side, it will make the gains of a revolution permanent until a new one is needed. When we add Pluto, the current secret ruler of the sky, to this equation, we can understand why we should not fear any kind of crisis or challenge that promises to liberate us during this period. We cannot escape anyway; Pluto does not ask politely.

I hope that in this Aquarius season, our hope for rights, equality, justice, and freedom flourishes again. I hope we experience developments that will allow us to look to the future with hope, or at least be blessed with the ability to read the ongoing crises in this more 'wise' manner.
